Gnat Control in Southeast Michigan

Gnats are small flying insects that are common indoors, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and around houseplants. The most frequently encountered types are fungus gnats and drain gnats, both of which breed in moist organic matter. An ongoing gnat problem is almost always tied to a moisture or organic buildup issue inside the structure.

Where They Are Found

Kitchen drains and sink areas
Overwatered houseplants and potting soil
Bathroom drains and damp floor areas
Garbage cans and compost bins

Identification

Michigan homes commonly encounter two types of gnats. Here is what to look for.

Appearance

Tiny, dark-bodied flies, typically 1/16" to 3/16" in length. Fungus gnats have long legs and antennae; drain gnats (also called moth flies) are stockier with fuzzy, moth-like wings. Both are weak fliers and cluster near their breeding sources.

Breeding & Damage

Fungus gnats breed in moist soil and can damage plant roots. Drain gnats breed in the organic film inside pipes and drains. Neither is a significant health threat, but large populations are persistent and difficult to eliminate without addressing the source.

Lifecycle

Gnats can complete a generation in as little as 3–4 weeks under warm indoor conditions. Females lay dozens of eggs directly in the breeding medium. Populations can build quickly, especially in late fall and winter when plants are kept indoors.

How We Treat

Effective gnat control requires identifying and treating the breeding source, not just the adult flies. We inspect for drain buildup, moisture issues, and over-saturated soil conditions and treat accordingly. Drain treatment, targeted product application, and moisture reduction recommendations are all part of our approach.

FAQ

Common indoor gnats are not considered a significant health threat and do not bite. The main concern is the nuisance of persistent populations and, in the case of fungus gnats, potential damage to houseplant roots. Some people with sensitivities may find them irritating.
Gnats breed in places that are hard to reach, such as the organic film inside drainpipes or deep in saturated potting soil. Surface cleaning does not eliminate these breeding sites. Ongoing populations almost always mean there is an active source that has not yet been treated or resolved.
