Description

Silverfish are nocturnal insects and are approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch in length. Their abdomen is tapered at the end, which gives them a fish-like appearance. Newly hatched silverfish are whitish, but develop a greyish hue and metallic shine as they get older. They have three long cerci at the tips of their abdomens, one off the end of their body, one facing left, and one facing right. They also have two small compound eyes, despite other members of Thysanura being completely eyeless, such as the family Nicoletiidae.

Silverfish are wingless. They have long antennae and move in a wiggling motion that resembles the movement of a fish. This, along with their appearance and silvery scales, gave them their common name. Silverfish live for about two to eight years. They are agile runners and outrun most of their predators (including spiders and centipedes). Such running is only possible on horizontal surfaces, as they lack additional appendages and, therefore, are not fast enough to climb walls at the same speed. They are afraid of light and are commonly found in bathrooms, basements and attics.

Preventing and Controlling Silverfish Infestations

Silverfish, like all other pests, need food, shelter and water to survive and flourish. Silverfish look for humid and moist areas. The following steps should be taken, both in prevention and in control:

Make sure that plumbing is insulated in kitchen and bathroom areas to prevent condensation on pipes. Moisture is a key component in any pest infestation.

Control humidity inside the home. This is particularly important in basements and bathrooms. Silverfish are also commonly found in bathrooms and attics.

Food sources: Silverfish have a wide-range of food sources. Think outside of the box. Dog food, cereal and other carbohydrate-rich foods are on the menu, but silverfish will feed on any organic materials. This includes glue in book bindings, cotton, wool and any other natural fibers.

I.P.M. or Integrated Pest Management is a combination of chemical and non-chemical processes which together maximize treatment results for target pests.

By using existing knowledge of pest biology and by identifying existing areas that may contribute to pest activity, such as food or water sources and entry-points, services can be conducted in an environmentally sensitive approach.
