Starling Control in Southeast Michigan
European starlings are one of the most persistent bird pests in Southeast Michigan. They nest in vents, soffits, and building cavities, causing property damage, creating fire hazards in dryer and exhaust vents, and leaving behind droppings that pose health risks. We serve Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, and Livingston counties.
Where They Are Found
Identification
European starlings are an invasive species in Michigan. Here is what to look for.
Appearance
Stocky, dark bird about 8" long with a short tail and pointed yellow bill (spring/summer). Plumage is iridescent green and purple in summer, speckled white in winter. Loud and aggressive toward native cavity-nesting birds.
Nesting & Damage
Starlings nest in cavities and vents, packing them with debris that can block airflow and create fire hazards. Droppings accumulate quickly and are corrosive to surfaces. Droppings also carry health risks including histoplasmosis.
Season
Nesting begins as early as March and peaks in April and May. Females lay 4 to 6 eggs, which hatch in about 12 days. Young leave the nest roughly three weeks later. Starlings may raise two broods per season.
